Differences between Machine Learning and AI

The terms machine learning and artificial intelligence have been appearing on websites more frequently during the past years. Both concepts may seem synonyms, but they are different. At the same time, to differentiate them in a deeper way, you need to do a Master in Machine Learning. Do you want to know more? Keep reading!

Machine Learning

Firstly, Machine learning (ML) is a branch of artificial intelligence. It bases itself on the ability that machines have to learn. This learning can take place without the programming of a human person. It can change the behaviour of its programs to learn from its mistakes and improve progressively. Therefore, ML allows the machine to learn by itself through examples of data through the extraction of a model of itself. This model allows the machine to answer to similar cases and prevent errors.

The aspects of machine learning that are improving in popularity are image recognition, data mining, predictive analytics and statistics. This association is what makes professionals differentiate machine learning from artificial intelligence. Although machine learning uses AI features such as automated reasoning or natural language processing, it does not need any other features.

However, in the master in machine learning we can learn that nowadays, this discussion about the differences isn’t over. Among both concepts there are similar uses and applications such as bots, intelligence assistants, etc.

ML is based on the fact that we can provide data to a machine and it will adapt its algorithm. Through deep learning, the machine can do that without the necessity of a human being behind its acts. It can also take actions as AI, but those actions are based in past data that has already been provided. Nevertheless, in order to train those machines, we need the intervention of humans who will use data over and over to do it.

Artificial Intelligence

Secondly, Artificial Intelligence (AI), also known as communicational intelligence, provides machines and devices with an intelligence that imitates the way that humans think. It involves the creation of computer systems with human-like behaviour. Therefore, AI provides machines with the capacity to solve problems, to perform in a logic way and analyse. Large databases and mathematical algorithms allow the development of the AI in machines.

It evolves in relation to the scientific study of how the human brain works. Therefore, as we began to know more and more about this aspect, we also develop the processes that a machine needs to be able to act and think as a person.

Technologies able to do specific tasks that humans can do, also use Artificial Intelligence. We can find this capacity in face recognition on applications as Facebook or Snapchat. Those applications can recognize our face perfectly thanks to the capacity that AI has on machines.

On the one hand, AI influences and acts on the tasks and actions that a device can perform. On the other hand, ML appears on the predictions of future mistakes. That is because it is able to understand, predict, estimate and classify things. When we need to act upon those classifications, AI takes places, which indicates that artificial intelligence needs machine learning to operate.
